Language Subtag Lookup

BCP 47 language tags are built from subtags in the IANA Subtag Registry. This tool helps you find or look up subtags and check for errors in language tags.

Read Choosing a Language Tag for step-by-step guidelines on creating language tags. This tool also provides information to guide your choices.

Check whether a hyphen-separated tag is valid and well-formed See note 4.

List all tags of the following type

Language Codes

Look up in the SIL Ethnologue. zxx No linguistic content, Not applicable

Comment.    zxx identifies non-linguistic content for which a language classification is inappropriate or does not apply, such as instrumental or electronic music, sound recordings consisting of non-verbal sounds, audiovisuals with no narration or dialog, or printed titles, or subtitles, machine-readable data files consisting of machine languages or character codes, programming source code, etc.

Look up in the SIL Ethnologue. und Undetermined

Comment.    und identifies linguistic content whose language is not determined.
Note.    und should not be used unless a language tag is required and language information is not available or cannot be determined. Omitting the language tag (where permitted) is preferred. This subtag may also be useful when matching language tags in certain situations. Where xml:lang="" is allowed by the markup, it is better to use that rather than und (see a longer explanation).

This version has been updated to support the approximately 7800 new subtags, including extlang subtags, introduced in July 2009, and the tool now provides help in choosing subtags and a tag checker based on RFC 5646. Please report any bugs to me.
Currently supports the IANA Subtag registry of 2010-06-30. The tool currently reports subtags for 7,843 languages, 225 extlangs, 145 scripts, 296 regions, 46 variants, and 26 grandfathered subtags.
